Syphilis is a sexually transmitted disease caused by the bacterium Treponema pallidum spirochete. It is transmitted mostly by sexual contact. Pregnant mothers with syphilis can also transmit it to their babies.
SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS
1. Primary Stage - appearance of sore 3 weeks after transmission
2. Secondary Stage - reddish to brownish rashes on the palms and soles of the feet, swollen lymph nodes, headache, muscle aches, fatigue, hair loss, fever
3. Late signs - paralysis, multi organ damage that may result to death
DIAGNOSTIC TEST
- blood tesr, microscopic examination of the sore
MEDICATION
Antibiotic - penicillin
** Avoid sexual contact until sores are healed.
